High School Guidance Counselor
Dr. Dovie Gray wins Comedy Laugh Out© Amateur Comedian Contest
High school guidance counselor Dr. Dovie Gray from Martin L. King High
School in Decatur, GA took the grand prize in this year's comedian contest at
the 14th Street Playhouse in midtown Atlanta. Finalist amateur comedians
from the metro Atlanta area and even as far as South Carolina took the stage to
compete for a grand prize of $1,000. Excitement was high and so was
audience laughter as the finalists turned up the intensity of their
performances.
The
show was a blowout as finalists came out swinging
for a chance to win the prize money. People showed up from every
side of town, even from out of town, to support and vote for their choice. All of the comedians did an excellent job making it a tough vote.
But to help the audience out, a panel of judges did the primary voting
which consisted of Darryl Peeks from Love 86AM WAEC. The ultimate vote
was left up to the audience who gave a final roaring victory shout for Dr. Dovie
Gray, a high school guidance counselor at Martin L. King, Jr. High School.
Clutching her $1,000 check and embraced by a mob of friends & supporters, Dovie
stood center stage in the winner's spotlight.
2nd
place winner Irma Williams invited some 30+ people from her job, along with
numerous others from her church making it a close race with Dovie. "This
was so great. I'm looking forward to doing more shows." In the post-show
celebration, Irma showed her pearly whites as she received congratulations from
co-workers. Her youngest son Joseph, age 14, expressed his "joy" at
going to their favorite restaurant to celebrate the night.
Ron G
(Gaither) took 3rd place just after recently winning first place in the WB
network's "Sierra
Mist Late Nite Laff Off."
Ron works the comedy circuit around the metro-Atlanta area performing at various
comedy clubs.
Although everyone did not receive a prize, all of the finalists were winners!
The remaining finalists were comedians Ron Javier, NeCall McKoy, and
Victor Terrell. Terrell traveled from as far as South
Carolina, along with his mother and friends who came to support him. Probably the most unique
comedian was Ron Javier whose make-believe character "Beauregard Buccanon
Thibideux" had had folks rollin' on the floor. He was so good, some people
thought he really was Beauregard.
The
evening was hosted by actor, comedian Andrew Ford. Ford who had just
finished opening for award-winning Gospel music artist Fred Hammond at a local
Atlanta conference did an excellent job harassing audience members, keeping
hecklers in line, and teasing
judges throughout the evening.
Dwell
Together In Unity (DTIU) gave a total of 30 tickets to the Salvation Army's
ministry for disadvantaged youth during this series. It was great
to see these teenagers happy, laughing and enjoying themselves.
"It's so great to have a unique, fun place for young people to go that's safe
and free from profanity," said the DTIU staff.
It was a great night leaving
people hungry for more. This is not the end for these newcomers.
Shows are scheduled through the summer with guest appearances. For more
information on the comedians, visit our comedians page!
